Place yourself somewhere you are respected and do not feel underutilized.
And if there is no such place, then it is not your thing to do.
There are some what-ifs, though. Your family depends upon your earnings, or you have to buy yourselves a house for old age, or you have your lifestyle to maintain, for which a regular job is essential.
But is it that there is no other job for you, and you continue your present occupation disrespected despite being more talented and productive? People outwit you with their cleverness because they are a majority?
One thing you should remember is that helplessness is always belittled. You appear incapable if you act out of powerlessness.
If you are in any such situation, open your notes and answer the following questions:
- Is your decision to continue dependent upon a loved one’s hopes for you?
- You are always disrespected and undervalued no matter how much work you put in?
- Wherever you go, there is a vicious circle of despise because you are talented?
- Are you willing to do it anyways, without support, as it is your life’s call, and all your ideas run around your field of expertise, and you think of nothing else?
- Is the whole thing just a game, and are you an experiment without a say in your current situation?
- Does giving up bring peace to you or add on to your agony?
- Can you diversify? And should you? Will you be valued then?
- Screw it all and become a dependent, and keep cursing yourself and others?
- Is it you who should leave despite strong adjustments or them who have a problem?
- You know that the best of your tribe do not want you to quit, but presently they are not around, so is it the only place that is left to continue?
By the tenth question that you reach to answer, you already have an answer. Should you go by it?
You were told by some bravehearts that perseverance and consistency are important for success. Is this what you want, or should you retreat homewards, where you will be troubled and feel like a loser who could not keep up with their own values while valuing others and still not being valued by them?
How much to suffer, and how to avoid suffering by quitting?
Today I attended two lectures for a course that I enrolled myself in and was glad that I wasn’t a novice. I have a clinical mind. They all taught well and were from the premier institutes in the country and the world.
If I quit, the effort would be gone; the certificates will not be of any use anymore.
I devoted myself to the field of medicine all my life; now it was the time to reap the fruit, but I am looking towards competitors and their monopoly who do not value me or my work. They all are high-headed.
Therefore, I opened Meditations and will quote a stoic rule by Marcus Aurelius that renders me less vulnerable whenever I read it:
Mere things stand isolated outside our doors, with no knowledge or report of themselves. What then reports on them? Our directing mind.
I am a doctor and professor by profession, but I am being undervalued and disrespected for no fault of mine. My tribe lately feels against me, despite me taking care of them out of the way.
I have a plan B. But my directing mind ushers me to continue a bit longer.
So should my readers, unless their answers are different at varied crossroads of their life.
Keeping myself safe and stable for the time being is my foremost preoccupation nowadays. Good things might come my way.
